IAG - Information Advice and Guidance

With the closure of the Connexions Service later this year, the responsibility of delivering Information, Advice & Guidance (IAG) with regards to the support needed by young people to help them make decisions about their future, will now become the obligation of the Secondary Schools to deliver as part of the Education Act 1997.

Schools are responsible for structuring their workforce to meet the needs of their pupils and communities as they organise the delivery of careers education and the wider provision of Information, Advice and Guidance. They will also have to engage actively with parents/carers (who remain the single most important influence on young people’s learning and on their career choices) providing them with the advice and guidance that they need to help their children make constructive decisions about learning and work. This is going to mean that schools will need an IAG qualified staff base that will take up these additional duties.

“The head teacher has overall responsibility for ensuring that all his/her staff (not only careers/IAG specialists) understand their statutory responsibilities in this area and that they receive the training and support that they need to undertake their duties effectively”.
(Department for Education. Statutory Guidance: Impartial Careers Education. DCSF-00978-2009)
