Course Overview

This qualification is intended for candidates who work or want to work in the private security industry and require a SIA licence to practice. The purpose of this course is to give door supervisors tactics and techniques that will allow them to work effectively, stay safe, and operate within the boundaries of the law.

Qualification/Course Structure

To achieve the level 2 Award in Door Supervision candidates must complete four mandatory units.

Unit 1 – Working in the private security industry (assessed by multiple choice examination)

Learning outcomes are:

  • Know the purpose and main features of the private security industry
  • Understand the legislation that is relevant to people working in the private security industry
    • Understand relevant aspects of health and safety in the workplace
    • Know how to apply the principles of fire safety
    • Know how to deal with non-fire-related workplace emergencies
    • Understand the principles of effective communication and customer care in the private security industry

Unit 2 – Working as a Door Supervisor (assessed by multiple choice examination)

Learning outcomes are:

  • Understand the behaviour appropriate for individual door supervisors, as defined by the Security Industry Authority’s (SIA) Standards of Behaviour
    • Understand the elements of civil and criminal law relevant to door supervisors
    • Understand search procedures and the reasons for having them
    • Understand the powers of arrest and related procedures
    • Understand relevant drug legislation and its relevance to the role of the door supervisor

Unit 3 – Conflict Management for the private security industry (assessed by multiple choice examination)

  • Understand physical interventions and the legal and professional implications of their use
    • Understand how to recognise, assess and reduce risk in conflict situations
    • Understand how to communicate effectively in emotive situations and de-escalate conflict
    • Understand how to develop and use problem solving strategies for resolving
    • Understand conflict good practice to follow after conflict situations

Unit – Physical Intervention Skills for the private security industry (Assessed by practical skills assessment)

Learning outcomes are:

  • Understand physical interventions and the legal and professional implications of their use
    • Understand how to reduce the risk of harm when physical intervention skills are used
    • Be able to use non-pain related physical skills to protect yourself and others from assault
    • Be able to use non-pain related standing holding and escorting techniques, including non-restrictive and restrictive skills
    • Understand good practice to follow after physical interventions

Training/Study Options

The course is delivered in the class room over four days, upon enrolment the candidate will be required to undertake a period of self study up to 8 hours, from the recourses we provide.

Training will include power point presentation, scenarios, discussion and question and answers.

Entry Requirements

There are no set pre-course requirements however basic levels of English literacy and numeracy are assumed. Age requirement 18+

Training would be delivered within one of our training centres

  • Chelmsford Centre
  • Rayleigh Centre

The course covers 30 hours of direct contact training and is conducted over 2 weekends (Sat/Sun)
