Education Courses - STLS Level 3

Awarding Organisation and Level

City & Guilds Level 3

Course Overview

This is a qualification suited to those who want to work as a teaching assistant, already helping out within a learning environment or who want to start a career working with pupils of any age in primary, secondary or special needs schools.  This qualification is both for new entrants in the teaching industry or for experienced workers who do not yet have a qualification recognised within the industry.

It has flexible training and assessment options including self study, classroom-based and one-to-one learning options. The course helps to build skills and confidence in a range of areas, meeting employer workforce demands. The flexibility of this qualification will enable an individual’s skills to be adapted for a specific job and employer requirement.

Qualification/Course Structure

The course consists of 11 mandatory units which include:

  • Communication and Professional Relationships with Children, Young People and Adults
  • Develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults
  • Engage in personal development in health, social care or children's and young people's settings
  • Promote children and young people's positive behaviour
  • Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people
  • Schools as organisations
  • Support assessment for learning
  • Support children and young people's health and safety
  • Support learning activities
  • Understand child and young person development
  • Understand how to safeguard the well being of children and young people

The additional optional units are chosen in conjunction with the assessor and will vary in number and subject according to which level is chosen and the job role.

Training/Study Options

Your assessor will visit your workplace on a regular basis to carry out assessment activities. In between these visits, tasks will also be given to the learner and they will also be able to contact their assessor by email.

At the outset of the course, a skills analysis will be carried out to determine the learner’s current skills level which will enable a judgement to be made as to any training that might be required. This training can include sessions run within our training centres, both as part of a group and one-to-one sessions, or as self-study which can be achieved in the learner’s own time.

This qualification is assessed in a number of different ways i.e. assignments, observations, practical assessments, video and photographic evidence etc. Submission dates will be set and you will get feedback on your work which will enable you to complete your units.

If you wish to enrol 6 or more learners from a single organisation, we can arrange to come to your own premises to deliver the necessary assessment and training days.

As a large part of the course involves collecting evidence and assessment, learners will need to be in a real working environment where this can be done.  They will also need to allocate some time for organising and planning their course work and progression.

Entry Requirements

Learners should already be working within a school environment and want to gain a qualification that proves your skills and helps you develop your career. They should either already hold the level 2 qualification or have an equivalent level of experience in a suitable job role.

Additionally, they will need to have sufficient language and literacy skills to be able to achieve the qualification they have chosen.

Schools will need to be supportive and ensure that they are able to provide appropriate opportunities for learners to meet the evidence requirements.

Duration of Course & Locations

Training would be delivered within one of our training centres:

  • Rayleigh
  • Chelmsford

It is anticipated that the length of the programme will be 3 to 9 months although this depends on the learner’s progress through the course and any prior experience in this sector.

Progression

Learners can progress to a higher NVQ in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools, a foundation degree leading to a full degree and PGCE
