TAQA Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement Level 3

Awarding Organisation and Level

City & Guilds Level 3

Course Overview

The TAQA Assessment qualification replaced the A units (commonly known as the A1) in September 2010. This qualification is for anyone that is working in, or hoping to take up a role in, assessment.

The TAQA units and qualifications provide people who carry out assessment roles within their organisation with the opportunity to develop and improve their practice as well as achieving a professional qualification for their roles. It has been developed for those working in accredited learning, non-accredited learning, the NQF and the QCF.

Qualification/Course Structure

The TAQA qualifications consist of a mix of modules - some are competence-based and some knowledge based. The knowledge only module ( 'Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment') allow anyone who is interested in or needs to know about assessment and quality assurance, but is not a practitioner, to acquire knowledge and information about the roles.

The modules which are practice based require the candidate to complete the learning outcomes as listed in the documentation for individual modules.

  • Unit 1: Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment
A knowledge-only Award for those who need to know about assessment but who are not currently practicing e.g. aspiring assessors or quality managers.

  • Unit 2: Assess Occupational Competence in the Work Environment
For practitioners who assess the achievement of competence in a work environment using the following assessment methods: observation, examining work products, oral questioning and discussion, use of others (e.g. witnesses), learner statements and RPL.

  • Unit 3: Assessing Vocational Skills, Knowledge and Understanding
For practitioners who assess achievement in vocationally-related situations e.g. classrooms or workshops and who use the following assessment methods: assessments in simulated environments, skills tests, oral and written questions, assignments, projects, case studies and RPL.

To assess both the occupational competence in the workplace and knowledge and understanding you should work towards the Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (Units 1, 2 & 3).

Training/Study Options

This qualification can be achieved by attending a training day for each unit in one of our training centres and is assessed by written assignment and/or discussion plus workplace observation for the practical units.

If you wish to enrol 6 or more learners from a single organisation, we can arrange to come to your own premises to deliver the necessary training days.

As a large part of their course involves collecting evidence and assessment of your candidates, they will need to be in a real working environment where this can be done.  They will also need to allocate some time for organising and planning their course work and progression.

Entry Requirements

To complete the practical assessment units, learners must be part of an established assessment delivery team and be working with at least 2 learners.

Applicants should have a suitable level of experience in the industry in which they wish to assess. Although this is not a requirement for the qualification, the qualification standards may determine a minimum level of experience in order to demonstrate occupational competence.

Duration of Course & Locations

1 day of training for each unit delivered in one of our centres:

  • Rayleigh
  • Chelmsford

These training sessions will be followed by workplace activities. It is anticipated therefore that the length of the programme will be 3 to 6 months in length.
