Education Courses - PTLLS

Awarding Organisation and Level

City & Guilds Level 3 or 4 (depending on level selected)

Course Overview

This nationally recognised City and Guilds qualification is suitable for anyone who is currently working in training, tutoring or assessing role, or who is entering this profession and is the new minimum requirement for people who wish to assume any of these roles in post-16 education sector. It is aimed at learners who:

  • would like or require an introduction to teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector
  • are seeking career progression within their area of work
  • will be/are seeking to progress towards ATLS/QTLS status
  • teach courses that aren’t publicly funded
  • are trainers in industry
  • technicians and support staff in further and adult education.

The course covers the basics of teaching in continuing and adult education - including how to plan sessions, motivate learners and use a variety of assessment methods.

It's a first step towards official practitioner status - a full licence to teach in the lifelong learning sector.

Qualification/Course Structure

The Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector can be delivered at both level 3 and level 4. The selection of the appropriate level will be according to the needs of the learners.

The level of the qualification is determined by the assessment criteria and assessments, rather than the learning outcomes and indicative content. In practical terms, this means that delivery of the qualification will be the same for both levels 3 and 4; the overall level achieved will depend on the assessment tasks undertaken and the results achieved.

The Award is a one unit qualification consisting of five mandatory sections which correspond to the learning outcomes. These sections are:

  • Understand own role, responsibilities and boundaries of role in relation to teaching
  • Understand teaching and learning approaches in the specialist area
  • Demonstrate session planning skills
  • Understand how to deliver inclusive sessions which motivate learners
  • Understand the use of different assessment methods and the need for record keeping

For those learners aiming to achieve the level 4 Award, they will need to demonstrate:

  • an understanding of the relationship between theory/principles and practice
  • evidence of research and reading
  • evidence of consideration of practice that is in accordance with professional values
  • an academic style of writing in which a recognised system of referencing is used (Harvard is recommended). Writing should be concise and candidates should provide evidence of careful planning.

Training/Study Options

The PTLLS course is delivered in an intense format with two delivery options available:

  • 5 consecutive days of delivery across 1 week (Monday to Friday)
  • 6 days spread across 6 weeks (Friday only)

This is a professional teaching qualification and the course requires your active participation and the completion of coursework assignments. Assignments are set by City and Guilds and comprise a theory assignment and a practical assignment. Assessment includes delivering a 20-minute teaching session to the rest of the group. You will therefore need to be able to express yourself effectively both orally and in writing. You will need a qualification or experience in the subject area you intend to teach.

If you wish to enrol 6 or more learners from a single organisation, we can arrange to come to your own premises to deliver the necessary assessment and training days.

Entry Requirements

This Award is for new entrants to the Lifelong Learning Sector - you don't need any prior teaching experience or qualifications. It also suits people working in the area already who want to gain official qualifications. You should have an idea of what subject you'd like to teach and either have or be working towards a qualification in that area.

Good levels of English and Maths would also be desirable.

Training would be delivered within one of our training centres:
